RDS (Radio Data System)

A standardized communications protocol used for embedding small amounts of digital information into conventional analog FM radio broadcasts.

What is RDS (Radio Data System)?

RDS adds a low-bandwidth digital data subcarrier to analog FM transmissions, typically delivering around 1,200 bits per second. That modest capacity is enough to carry station identification (call letters), program service name, traffic alert flags, real-time scrolling text (radiotext), clock time, and Programme Type (PTY) codes — everything a modern car radio needs to display useful information on the dashboard.

RDS remains enormously important even in the digital-radio era. Hundreds of millions of FM-only receivers worldwide rely on RDS for station name display, automatic tuning, and traffic-interrupt functionality. For advertisers and broadcasters, RDS enables real-time sponsor-branded text that appears on vehicle dashboards during commercials — a small but meaningful visual extension of audio advertising.

Why it matters

Enables the receiver dashboard to display station call letters, scrolling song titles, and specific Programme Types (PTY) to the listener.
