Bed

An instrumental music track played continuously underneath a presenter's voice or a commercial narrative read.

What is Bed?

A Bed is the instrumental music layered under spoken audio — the gentle underscore beneath a host's monologue, the intense cue beneath an action commercial, the atmospheric pad beneath a documentary narration. Beds set emotional tone without distracting from the vocal; they must be carefully chosen, level-balanced, and sometimes custom-produced to leave frequency space for the voice.

Bed choice shapes commercial effectiveness more than many producers realise. Empirical research consistently shows that well-matched beds lift ad recall and emotional response significantly over the same copy read without a bed, but poorly chosen beds — too loud, too busy, tonally inappropriate — actively reduce comprehension. The craft of bed selection is one of the quiet differentiators between mediocre and excellent commercial production.

Why it matters

Establishes the underlying emotional tone and pacing of a commercial spot without distracting from the core vocal message or call to action.
